Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Officers say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the incident," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for information.
An important official stated the incident rendered him without words and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in 2020.
