The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the family owners has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
