The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight foot to clinch the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off victory over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
The champion entered the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke clear with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.
Play-Off Decider
This set up a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.

Other Performances
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
