At least 64 individuals died in a police operation against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's history.

Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials stated. Over 80 people were detained.

Intense confrontations broke out when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The slum neighborhoods near the city's international airport is regarded as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

State officials stated a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Residents have described the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Transport routes stay blocked throughout the region.

Gang Growth

The criminal network has been growing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Rio's police reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the operation, in addition to dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are considered affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.

Broader Context

Major law enforcement actions are frequent in Brazil prior to important worldwide conferences in the country.

The UN climate summit COP30 is set to occur in the city of Belem in the north in late autumn.
