Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.
Summers remarked in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the potential of the company, and look forward observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously led the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public emails revealed that the economist corresponded with the financier until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the AI firm said it understood his decision to resign.
"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the Board," the company remarked.
Legislative Background
This announcement arrives after the entire Congress of the legislative branch voted on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would compel the US justice department to make public its records on Epstein.
The measure will then head to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. Trump has indicated he intends to approve the measure, after modifying his stance on the subject following objections from his supporters.
Message Details
A batch of financier-linked correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The emails revealed that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to connect the official to notable international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my poor choice to persist in corresponding with the financier".
He added that he wanted "to rebuild faith and fix bonds with the persons nearest to me".
Career Background
The economist occupied high-level positions under Democratic administrations; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties previously on this week, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where he was a prominent member, verified that the economist was not connected with the institution.
Summers joined the board of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its CEO OpenAI's head.
