The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
