Climate Heating in New England Faster Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Study Finds.

The US region famous for its colonial history, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is undergoing a dramatic transformation. Fresh analysis shows that New England is warming faster than nearly any other place on the Earth.

Breakneck Pace of Transformation

The speed of temperature increase in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the continental United States, according to the study. The rate of its warming has reportedly accelerated notably in the last half-decade.

"The temperature is not only increasing, it's accelerating," explained a lead researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being largely consistent for millennia."

The research places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming areas in the world, alongside the Arctic and parts of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the American South," the researcher noted.

Analysis Methodology and Findings

For the study, researchers examined multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review encompassed the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

They discovered that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the global average, with the planet warming by approximately 1.3°C in the comparable timeframe.

"That is extremely rapid warming, which is alarming," commented the study author.

Marine Factors and the "Heat Battery"

A major cause for this unusual build-up of heat may be shifts in the North Atlantic. The global seas are taking in the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by greenhouse gases.

In the region near New England, an increase of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.

"The excess heat from global warming is being held in the sea like a massive storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a recipient of that energy."

Impacts on Life and Extremes

Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has experienced extreme weather shocks in recent years, including devastating flooding and prolonged dry spells.

The increasing temperatures poses a threat to iconic aspects of local culture:

  • Syrup production is being affected by shifting climate conditions.
  • Winter sports are disrupted; an ice hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or relocated repeatedly due to a lack of ice.
  • Winter tourism have struggled because of inadequate snowfall.

"I live just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That sort of thing has largely vanished from much of the southern part of the region."
